Week 9: Field work - On Campus Observation (IIUM)
Salam everyone! A discussion of a topic that is, Field Work - ON CAMPUS OBSERVATION
Economic Contributions
IIUM is committed to reducing food waste and supporting students in need through initiatives like the Food Bank Program. In collaboration with organizations such as the OhFreeFood app, this initiative helps minimize waste while providing resources to those who require them.
Social Engagement
Mental health awareness has become a priority at IIUM, particularly in light of the challenges posed by the post-COVID-19 world. Through campaigns and articles, the university aims to foster understanding and support for mental health issues among students.
Additionally, the Cat Shelter Program stands out as a social initiative that encourages compassion and responsibility. It provides shelter and care for stray cats, reinforcing the value of empathy within the campus community.
Environmental Actions
On the environmental front, IIUM has been working to reduce its carbon footprint through the use of solar panels and other energy-saving measures. These efforts reflect the university’s commitment to sustainability.
Waste Management Efforts
Proper waste management is a key focus, and IIUM has taken significant steps with its Recycling Stations, placed throughout the campus to encourage responsible waste disposal.
The Food Waste Composting Project, launched in July 2017, also plays a crucial role in minimizing environmental impact and cutting down waste management costs. While the initiative aimed to collect 300 kg of food waste weekly, factors like semester breaks and Ramadan affected the results.
Green Campus Programs
IIUM’s commitment to environmental sustainability is also reflected in programs like the River Conservation Campaign at the Kuantan campus, which works to protect local water bodies.
In 2018, the university took part in World Clean-Up Day, promoting campus cleanliness and environmental responsibility among students and staff.
