Week 4: International Framework of Sustainable Development

Salam everyone ! In week 4, I learned about International Framework of Sustainable Matter. It started way back in 72', the UN conference in Stockholm. Major events like the Brundtland Report, Rio Earth Summit, and the Kyoto Protocol show how we’ve slowly become more aware of balancing the environment with economic progress.

What caught my interest during this lecture was the politics behind Developed and Developing Countries. Not all countries are on the same page, as they have different challenges, obstacles, resources and problems for a country.

For instance, Developed Countries had the money and power, but they caused more pollution, damage to the enviroment due to factors of population, use of industrial power and wastage being consumed and produced, whilst Developing countries like our country, we cant fully afford to "go green" as we do not have the sufficient resources to really have power and infrastructure to stand with this movement.

Malaysia has its own unique approach to sustainable development called Sejahtera. It’s not just about the environment—it’s about being whole as individuals and as a society. The word “sejahtera” means peace, safety, and prosperity. But it’s more than that; it’s deeply connected to Islamic values like justice, harmony, and our relationship with God. Sejahtera reminds us that true well-being isn’t only about external conditions, but also about what we feel and believe inside.

Overall, this lecture gave me a deeper sense of responsibility not just to reduce my carbon footprint, but to live in a way that promotes peace, justice, compassion, and integrity. Its about balancing our personal lives with the bigger picture, both locally and globally.
