Week 2 : Islam and Sustainable Devlopment

Salam everyone, once again, welcome back to my blogspot !

This time around, the class was about on Islam's perspective on sustainable development. Islam provides a timeless framework that aligns with modern ideas of balancing the economy, society, and the environment. The concept of sustainability in Islam is not new, it is deeply rooted in the teachings of the Qur'an and Sunnah, and thats the beauty of it.

In Islam it is to be said, "Sustainability as Divine Rensposibility "

In Islam, sustainability is part of the belief in Tawhid (the oneness of Allah) and the role of humans as Khalifah (guardians) of the earth, entrusted by Allah with the responsibility to maintain:

  1. Social Sustainability: Promoting equity, governance, and human dignity.

  2. Environmental Sustainability: Focusing on conservation and ecological balance.

  3. Economic Sustainability: Ensuring fair distribution of wealth and ethical financial systems.

When I first heard about it, I never really know that our taqwa or our tawhid has something to do with us as being the Khalifah of this duniya, at it really hits home and wholesome at the same time.
We were also thought about 5 Maqasid al-Shariah and the SDGs.

Maqasid al-Shariah and the SDGs

The Maqasid al-Shariah (goals of Islamic law) align closely with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  1. Hifz al-Din: Partnership and peace.

  2. Hifz al-Nafs: Social and health sustainability.

  3. Hifz al-Aql: Education and knowledge economy.

  4. Hifz al-Mal: Economic equity and ethical trade.

  5. Hifz al-Nasl: Environmental and family sustainability

With these 5 attributes we can correlate in various areas like consumption, economy and environment.
These can be seen in Moderation (wasatiyyah), lawful and wholesome (Halal & Tayyib), Zakat, Sadaqah, Takaful, Green energy and respect of all forms of life, truly Islam is the way of life !

Other religions are found to have perspectives of Sustainability as the following :

  • Buddhism: Harmony with nature.

  • Confucianism: Balance and moral order.

  • Christianity: Stewardship of creation.

  • Hinduism: The sacredness of the environment.
